Prayers & Squares Chapter 748

Hands tying knots in a quilt

Tying a knot and saying a prayer.

Prayers & Squares is an interfaith outreach ministry that combines the gift of prayer with the gift of a hand-tied quilt.  Unlike many other organizations that make quilts for charitable causes, the purpose of Prayers & Squares is not to make and distribute quilts, but to promote prayers through the use of quilts.

What is a Prayer Quilt?
Can you touch a prayer?
Can you pull it close and feel its comfort?
You can if it’s part of a prayer quilt.

The idea behind these quilts is simple, yet powerful. A heavy thread is used to take stitches through the quilt layers, and the ends are left free to be tied with a square knot. As each knot is tied, a silent prayer is offered for someone in special need; someone who has asked us to pray for them. The quilt is then given to that person.  What makes each quilt so special is not the pattern, color or workmanship, but the fact that prayer is symbolically tied into each one.  These comfort quilts are a statement of faith, and a testimony to our belief in God and in the power of prayer.

Our motto is “It’s not about the quilt; it’s all about the prayers.”

Chapter 748 here at St. Paul’s has made and given many, many quilts.  We meet most Mondays in the Fellowship Hall (please check calendar for day and time) and all are welcome.  You do not need to know how to quilt – just have a willingness to learn.  We have lots of patterns, fabric and fun!    You can sew and work on projects at home and/or with us on Monday’s.
